The long putter anchors the club at a fixed point creating a pendulum motion through the ball creating a more consistent stroke. Plus it is easier on the back.

Also, some golfers stop there putting stroke using a regular putter and don't follow through. The long putter swings and releases.... deadly from 5 feet in.

Some say by using a long putter you are cheating. I don't see any merit in that statement. Those that used the long putter at the 2009 Masters golf tournament didn't fair any better on the green than those who used a regular putter.

One possible disadvantage with this club is lack of distance control since it takes the hands out of play. Spend some time on the practice green to get the feel. The long putter could be your answer to shaving some strokes off of your golf game.
